Choosing your baby’s cot bedding is a little bit more complicated than just choosing a style to match your nursery. You need to look at what type of bed you have for your baby, whether it’s a moses basket, crib, cot or cot bed and then what combinations of layers that you’ll need to cover a range of temperatures.

The ideal temperature range for nurseries is between 16 and 20 degrees, which allows you to use various layers to get your baby to the right temperature for peaceful sleeping.

Bedding comes in two varieties - items that are worn on the baby or those that are placed in the crib or cot under or over the baby. Cot bedding doesn’t use pillows or duvets, but will have tog ratings to give you guidance for warmth.

Sheets are vital for keeping things hygienic, and fitted sheets are often easier so your baby can’t wriggle them loose. It’s best to use lightweight cot bedding that can be layered to get to the right temperature, look for a mix of flat sheets, blankets and coverlets.

For newborns and younger babies consider starting with swaddles that remind them of the closeness of the womb, or sleeping bags that they can’t throw off in the night and get cold, before moving on to sleep suits or pyjamas.

After your baby is a year old you can move onto pillow and duvets and using accessories like cot bumpers.
