Safety Gates & Home Safety

Inquisitive children have a knack of finding their way into places they shouldn’t, and when they start crawling or walking it’s important to make sure they’re safe from hazards, whether you have stairs or not!

The biggest factor of course is the space you’re trying to cover as safety gates come in a variety of sizes and can often adjust to fit a range of widths, especially if they’re compatible with extension kits to cover large gaps.

Safety gates can be made from metal, wood, plastic or fabric and typically have two fitting types, those that are screwed into the walls, or a frame held in place by pressure so you don’t have to worry about leaving marks or holes in the wall. It’s recommended to use screw fit gates with stairs, as the frame of a pressure fit gate can pose a trip hazard, and to ensure it opens inwards.

Depending on how much space you have, you may want to look at different opening types. Barriers don’t have any form of door or gate and have to be placed and removed every time you want to go through. Most safety gates open sideways so will need plenty of space for them to swing open, some are easier to open one handed than others.  For those who want something more discreet there are some gates that retract when not in use.
